President's Message
Stacey Kotrla

Can you believe the year is halfway over? If you are an annual goal setter, now is a good time to review your goals and accomplishments for the year.  If you work for a company that does performance reviews, you are very familiar with this process. If you don’t, and you aren’t setting goals for yourself, you are missing out on a growth opportunity.

A couple of my personal goals for the year were to complete the Certified Aviation Manager exam offered through NBAA, complete my CFI renewal,  and get more involved in the Business Aviation community.  Thus far, I have completed the CAM certification, become elected President of this great organization, and joined the local Business Aviation Safety Committee. Items such as the CAM program and my CFI renewal are not covered work expenses. When you set professional goals for yourself, one way to help fund them is to apply for scholarships. I did apply to a few to help with my CAM certification, but I did not receive any awards. I don’t let this discourage me however, and will be applying to the next scholarship that has the potential to help my personal and professional development.

Right here within WCA, we have a wide variety of scholarships to choose from that cover a variety of aspects of business aviation. There are scholarships available to help you achieve your goals for Dispatchers, Pilots, Mechanics, Flight Attendants, and more.

One of the most common questions I get asked during the application window is what makes an application stand out from the others? Here are a few key points you should consider.

  1. Follow the directions! If the scholarship description asks for a copy of your pilot certificate, resume, essay, and other documents, make sure you send it all to us. Incomplete applications go to the bottom of the stack when we are reading them. Hint - For our current application process, you must submit a minimum of 4 PDF attachments to submit the application.
  2. Write a great essay! Unless there are specific guidelines for the content of the essay, consider writing about your goals, achievements, community involvement (giving back), and how the award will help you further your career. Hint - in Word, there is an option to Save As PDF.
  3. Plan ahead. You need 2 or 3 Letters of Recommendation. Don’t wait until the day before the deadline to start asking people to write you Letters. The time is now!
  4. Proof your application. If you can, have a peer or a mentor review your resume, essay, and supporting documents prior to submission.
  5. Apply! If you applied last year and didn’t win, apply again! You can apply for two WCA scholarship offerings, so pick the two that best fit your needs.
We would love to have multiple well-qualified applicants for each scholarship, and the deadline is just over a month away. Remember, you can’t win if you don’t apply! And if you don’t win this time, reapply during the next offering period.

Vice President's Message
Isha Jordan

Greetings to my fellow lovers of all things aviation!

This year is flying by and WCA is cruising right along. In this newsletter we will highlight our recent meetings at EBACE and the NBAA Flight Attendant Conference.  Next up for the Fall is the WCA Scholarship and Networking Luncheon Las Vegas, NV.  This is always one of the most exciting events of the year. If you have never attended the NBAA conference I would highly recommend doing so this year. The business aviation industry has reached new heights. Flight departments all over are hiring, cockpits are making new technological changes, and the international markets are offering new opportunities and making way for exciting business developments.

WCA will host our Annual Scholarship and Networking Luncheon during the conference on Wednesday November 18th.  Continue to check the website and your emails for more details as the date approaches. New scholarships are posted! We have extend the application deadline to August 30th. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact any committee member.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors for their continued support. Our organization depends not only on individual memberships, but sponsorships as well. Very recently some of our sponsors have gone above and beyond their usual dedicated amounts.  A big thank you to The Home Depot, who has continued their support by increasing the WCA Leadership Scholarship by $3000. Signature Flight Support Corporation added a Scholarship for $3000 for fall 2015.

Thank you to all the supporters of Women in Corporate Aviation. As our organization continues to grow we anticipate more scholarship offerings and mentorship opportunities. We are well pleased with 2015 so far. As always we invite you to share your ideas or area interest. WCA is here for you! I hope you all are having a great Summer. I look forward to seeing you in the Fall.

Cheers!
Isha Jordan

Greetings From Membership

Written by Lisa Musante

Have you logged into the new website yet?  Have you seen how easy it is to renew or even to join as a new member?  We know it was cumbersome in the past, but we made it so much easier now.  Since the launch of our new site, we have had 31 members join and/or renewed their membership!  With the new website, all of our members will now receive renewal notices to remind them to to renew their membership so they will not miss out on the many benefits that WCA has to offer!  Please help us spread the word to other business aviation organizations that you may know that could benefit from being a member with the Women In Corporate Aviation.

So what does the Membership Committee do? It takes care of its members, of course! We go out of our way to give a warm welcome to our new sign-ups and foster their participation in our group by helping them network and answering their questions. We also help rekindle old relationships with formerly active participants and share with them the progress we’ve made over the last few years.

If you are interested in helping to keep WCA growing and would like to volunteer for the committee, please email me at membership@wca-intl.org or call me (Lisa Musante) at 407-350-0877

First Ever WCA Corporate
Membership Drive

Written by Lisa Lewis & The Development Team
I bet most of you are wondering what exactly is a corporate membership drive? There seems to be no better way to describe it than that, but it’s a simple thing.  As you all know WCA is fully nonprofit, volunteer organization and our members are our lifeblood! We could not do what we do like give away over $100,000 in scholarships, without the support of you – our members. So that made us think, the best way for us to continue growing and providing our members with more opportunities is to ask you, our awesome members, to help us expand WCA’s corporate members!

Most of our current corporate members have come from our members and that is all we are asking you to do. Maybe your current employer would consider joining WCA or you do business with a company that might be interested in joining as a corporate member. It’s as easy as asking and sending them to our website to sign up - Join WCA! Then let us know who you brought up onboard with an email to development@wca-intl.org! That is it – have a corporation sign up as a WCA member and let us know!!! And just like with the individual membership, there are plenty of benefits for our Corporate Members, it’s pretty easy to sell as you can see below:
Also, as a thank you for helping the member who brings in the most corporate members, will win a free annual WCA subscription (so your next subscription will be free!) and a $50 visa gift card! Again, all you have to do is get a corporate member to sign up and send an email to development@wca-intl.org (Lisa Lewis) letting us know who you helped to sign up, it’s a simple as that!

Our corporate member drive has officially started with this announcement and will run through November 17th, 2015 which is the start of the 2015 NBAA Conference in Las Vegas, where we will be giving away over $61,000 in scholarships!!!

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Lisa Lewis – development@wca-intl.org or 812-371-3140

12 Hotel Safety Tips For Women While Traveling For Business

Written by Tracie Carwile
Security & Transportation Mission Advisor

Membership
Global Partnership Management

Women are traveling for business at a higher rate than ever before, which means we need to improve our safety awareness at all times – including the planning stages of booking hotels as well as when we arrive on-site.
  • Book hotel rooms on floors 3-5; refrain from booking on ground floors or floors higher than 5 when able due to limited or non-existent fire safety equipment worldwide
  • You can choose to not reference your first name or gender when booking your hotel room.  Booking your room under First initial and Last name is acceptable
  • Requesting a room nearest the fire exit is a considerable option for an easier emergency exit if needed
  • You can also insist that your room number and floor be kept private –Front desk guests and callers will not be able to access your information
  • When booking your room, inquire about recent paintings or fumigations done to your room, surrounding rooms, or floors below your room, this is especially true when traveling internationally as safety concerns from pesticides are not closely monitored as they are in the states
  • Always have the bellman assist you with your bags on arrival to act as a security buffer while locating your room the first time
  • If the windows to your room open, spend a few minutes ventilating the room upon arrival
  • Ensure balcony doors / windows are locked after ventilation, particularly if you are staying on floors 3 or lower.
  • It is always good to carry a non-expensive rubber stopper to place behind your door after settling in and right before bed time.
  • Keeping the "Do not disturb" sign on the outside of your door at all times implies the room is occupied – this is a good deterrent to room  break-ins/ theft
  • Allowing housekeeping to clean your room while in your presence will cut down on theft and/or unwanted individuals in your room. ( I usually call for housekeeping, wait until they arrive and then let them know I will be going down to the hotel dining area or gym and will be returning shortly)
  • All valuables and personal identification should be kept in the hotel safe when you are not using the items.  Tamper tape adhesive is recommended to place on the hotel safe to serve as an extra deterrent.

Hello from your international team,

EBACE has come and gone and with it our 6th annual Women in Corporate Aviation Networking Breakfast.

We had a record number of like minded industry professionals gather in the conference Center adjacent to the Palexo in Geneva on the second morning of EBACE and it was great to see that 46 participants came along. This years breakfast was sponsored by Universal, Gulfstream, Air Culinaire and Women in Corporate Aviation and we are grateful for their contributions.

Each of the sponsors took to the floor and we had some interesting speakers who talked about the importance of bringing more women into the industry. Some of them shared some personal experiences and also described what their company’s initiatives are to address diversity.

We then did a round of introductions and it didn't take long for people to mingle, network and exchange business cards.

We have become a string pillar of the EBACE community over the past six years and our involvement is growing.

For one we had an EBAA sponsored booth available to us which was run by Tim Kirkwood and his wonderful team of volunteers.

Then we were invited to a couple of the EBAA conference sessions and boy did we deliver! The panel of one of the sessions consisted of an all WCA cast!

So what now? Aquaintences have been made, friendships deepened, new members have signed up and I am actually on my way to the Royal Aeronautical Society in London as I am writing this as I have been invited to take part in a focus group for an academic study. Oh and there might even be an article about us coming up in one of the online aviation magazines..so....watch this space...

The globe is getting smaller and I'd encourage anyone that visits international territory to reach out and meet your fellow international members...even if only for a spot of afternoon tea.

CBAA Convention

Women in Corporate Aviation, under the direction of Directors Tim Kirkwood and Paula Kraft were recently welcomed and well represented at the Canadian Business Aviation Convention and the NBAA Flight Attendant conferences. Here are some pictures and more information. WCA has also been asked to participate in the EAA WomenVenture program. We have sent informational brochures to include in 650 bags for participants.
WCA was recently invited to attend the annual convention of the CBAA, which this year, was held in the Av Fuel Hangar at St. Hubert Airport in Montreal, Quebec.  Close to 50 companies were exhibiting, including FBOs, Fuel suppliers, crew and avionics software, training organizations and schools, as well as local Canadian airports and suppliers.  Outside of the hangar was a static display of aircraft from  ombardier, HondaJet, Embraer, Dassault-Falcon, Gulfstream, among others.

The Canadian Business Aviation Association (CBAA) is a non-profit association formed in 1961 as Canada’s voice forbusiness aviation.  Since its inception, CBAA has assumed an increasing leadership role in its advocacy for Canadian business aviation interests.

With a membership of approximately 400 companies and organizations, including operators, management companies and suppliers, CBAA represents the entire business aviation community with a unified and collective voice.

Beginning with a charity golf tournament, the convention venue then presented educational breakout sessions for Flight Operations / Management, Maintenance, Pilots and Crew, as well as Schedulers and Dispatchers.  There was also an open forum called “Ask Me Anything” with  experts answering questions from the attendees.

The next CBAA convention is scheduled for July 5-7, 2016 in Calgary, Alberta.
